The window seat: what stepping away does to a stuck problem
When a proof has not moved in forty minutes, staring is the worst option. What stepping away does, when it works, and when it is just avoidance.

On some problems, staring longer is the worst option available. When a proof, an outline, or a bug has not moved in forty minutes, the reading you are doing has stopped producing anything. The same three lines pass in front of you every two minutes and nothing changes. Standing up at that point is not surrender. It is the second method, and it works differently from the first one.
Two ways of working on the same problem
There is the deliberate kind of thinking, where you hold the problem in front of you and push at it step by step. That is what studying normally means, and it solves most problems. Then there is the loose kind that happens when your attention is not being held anywhere in particular: on a walk, in the shower, halfway through the washing up. Nobody is steering it. It drifts across things that are only vaguely connected, and now and then it puts two of them together in a way the deliberate mode would never have attempted, because the deliberate mode is busy being sensible.
That is as far as the explanation needs to go. A lot of confident language is available for this, and most of it is more precise than what is actually known. What matters in practice is the observation, which nearly everyone has made at some point: the answer often arrives when you are not at the desk. Ideas turn up on the way to the tram, not in minute thirty eight of glaring at the same paragraph.
The problem has to be loaded first
The condition that makes this work is easy to miss. Walking away only pays if you were genuinely stuck first. Loose thinking does not produce new material. It recombines what is already in your head. If you read the problem once, felt uncomfortable and left, there is nothing loaded to recombine, and the walk is only a walk.
So this is not a technique for the start of a session. It belongs after a serious attempt: after you have written down what is given, tried the obvious approach, watched it fail, and can say precisely where it fails. The sharper that formulation is, the more likely something useful comes back. Vague discomfort with chapter four produces nothing. The question of why the induction step breaks when n is even is a question that can be answered while queuing for bread.
What actually works and what does not
The activities that help have one thing in common. They occupy your body and almost none of your language. Walking, showering, washing up, riding the bus, cooking something you have cooked a hundred times, sorting laundry. There is enough going on to keep you from rereading the problem and not enough to require you.
The ones that fail share a property too. They take the resources the problem needs. Scrolling a feed replaces your own loose associations with a stream of somebody else’s, and it is very effective at that. An episode of something demands narrative attention. A second hard problem is just a different desk. Ten minutes of any of these and the original problem is not warm any more, it is cold, and re-entry costs another quarter of an hour.
This is worth separating from planned breaks, which are a different thing entirely. A break in a study plan exists so that you recover and the next block works. What is described here is not recovery. It is a second way of attacking one specific problem, and it can happen at a moment when you are not tired at all.
Carry something to write on
Whatever comes back arrives at an inconvenient moment and does not wait. It shows up with the confident feeling that it is far too obvious to forget, and then it is gone by the time you reach the desk, leaving behind only the knowledge that you had something. This happens often enough to be treated as a rule rather than as a personal failing.
Phone, notebook, the back of a receipt, a voice note if your hands are wet. Three words are usually enough, because you are not recording the idea, only the handle you need to pull it back. Trying to develop the thought properly during the walk means doing deliberate work under the worst available conditions, which defeats the point of leaving the desk.
Not every problem responds to this
The type of problem matters more than the length of the walk. Structural questions respond well: how the argument of an essay should be ordered, why a proof will not close, which of three explanations fits the data, what is actually wrong with code you have read six times. Each of these turns on a connection you have not yet made, and connections are what loose thinking is good at.
Rote material does not respond at all. Nothing about a walk delivers the seventeen vocabulary items you have not learned, or the dates, or the pathway you need to reproduce from memory. That work gets done by sitting down and retrieving, repeatedly, and there is no version of it that happens at the window. Confusing the two is expensive, because the material that most tempts people to leave the room is often exactly the material that only responds to more repetitions.
Method or avoidance
Here is the uncomfortable part. A productive step away and a plain escape look identical from the outside, and they feel remarkably similar from the inside. Both begin with a hard problem, both end with you leaving the room, and both come with a good explanation attached.
Two questions separate them reasonably well. Did you state the problem precisely before you stood up, or did you only notice that it had become unpleasant? And do you come back at a time fixed in advance, or does the return keep sliding? Ten minutes with a defined end and a defined question is a method. Ninety minutes that end in the kitchen with your phone is not, whatever it was when it started.
The pattern is easier to see across a week than in the moment. If a few sessions contain one such departure and most of those are followed by the problem coming apart, this is working. If every difficulty produces a walk, then walking away is not a second method. It is the routine used to avoid the first one, and no amount of correct theory about wandering attention changes what it is doing to the week.
