How to make a study schedule in five steps
- Block the fixed things first. Classes, work, commute and sleep go in before any study time.
- Count honest hours. Only the time you will really sit down counts. Pick how many flights fit on a weekday and on a weekend day.
- Pick a flight length. 25 minutes for flashcards and slow starts, 45–60 for one topic or a problem set, 90 for a new chapter.
- Rotate subjects. The planner hands each flight the next subject, so every subject comes up equally often across the week.
- Leave a buffer and rebook. Keep a day off or a light day; a missed flight moves to a free slot instead of being dropped.
The thinking behind these rules is in Filing a flight plan: schedule a study week that holds, and choosing a length is covered in How long to study: short hop or long haul?
What the planner does
- Weekdays and weekends separately. Fewer flights on busy days, more on free ones.
- A real day off. The day you pick stays empty.
- Saturday practice test. If you tick it, Saturday becomes one uninterrupted 120-minute practice exam.
- Totals to exam day. With an exam date, you see how many flights and hours this pace adds up to by the day before.
- Every slot is a timer. Tap a subject to open the cockpit with that length. Single sessions also start from the study timer, and study with me shows who else is in the air.
Common questions
How do I make a study schedule?
Enter your exam date and your subjects, then choose how many study flights you can manage on weekdays and on weekends and how long each one lasts. The planner rotates your subjects through the week so each one comes up equally often. You can keep one day off and turn Saturday into a full practice test.
How many hours a week should I plan?
There is no number that fits everyone. Start with what you can actually keep up for one week, then add one flight. How to find your own limit is in “Weight and balance: how many hours a day you can really study”.
Is there a printable study schedule template?
Yes. “Print / save as PDF” prints only the plan; your browser's print dialog can also save it as a PDF.
Is my plan saved anywhere?
Only in this browser. There is no account and nothing is sent to a server.
Is the study planner free?
Yes. Study Airlines is free, needs no account and runs in your browser. There is also a free app for iPhone and iPad on the App Store.
