The departures board: why a public logbook helps you study

On the Study Airlines home page hangs a departures board. It shows in real time who is in the air right now: callsign, route, remaining time. No names, no profiles, no followers. And yet this board changes how studying feels.
The library effect
Why is it easier to study in a full library than alone at your kitchen table? Not because of the chairs. It is the others. People around you who are visibly working make it easier to work yourself. Social psychologists call it social facilitation, students call it body doubling. It is the reason hour-long “study with me” videos get millions of views.
The departures board is exactly that, minus the camera: a quiet reading room on the web. When three flights are in the air, you are no longer sitting alone with your material.
Anonymous, but binding
The second effect is subtler. The moment you board, your callsign appears on the public board. Nobody knows that SA 347 is you. But you know. A flight that is publicly in the air is harder to abort than a timer nobody has ever seen.
This is deliberately the mildest form of accountability: no streak that punishes you, no ranking that compares you to others. Just the simple fact that your flight is visibly happening right now.
Why no leaderboard?
Because leaderboards reward the wrong behaviour. Whoever wants to be on top optimises hours instead of understanding, and eventually logs time that is no longer studying. So the board only counts shared numbers: total flights, total focus hours, landings today. You contribute to a sum instead of competing against others.
